The state of the Australian Workforce

by | Oct 2, 2020 | News

The Australian job market has recently suffered a significant downturn. With Victoria in lockdown and travel restricted, Australia’s economy has experienced its first recession in almost 30 years with the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP) shrinking by 7%.

The University of Melbourne also estimates that without government financial programs such as JobKeeper, which maintains a formal link of employment for people that are unable to work due to COVID-19 restrictions, the nation’s jobless rate could be as high as 11.7%. New employment opportunities have subsequently been scarce.

However, despite rising unemployment, many sectors are thriving and continue to hire to meet growing demand. Of these industries, the community services sector remains a fast-growing industry in Australia. Projections suggest that this sector will have the strongest employment growth of any industry in future years.

One quarter of new jobs created annually are in the community services sector, which includes allied health, disability and aged care. For instance, usage of allied health recently grew by 43% in a decade and aged and disability support lately experienced a 17% increase in yearly job advertisements.

Growing new job opportunities

The community services sector is an essential service and its high demand for workers has resulted in allied health, disability and aged care vacancies. Individuals with customer service experience, patience, empathy and an ability to listen are desirable in these industries; however, those with relevant tertiary qualifications are highly regarded.

Working in allied health, disability and aged care provides a great opportunity to make a difference in the community and help fellow Australians live their best life. Support in these areas can include:

  • assisting with daily activities;
  • arranging social activities;
  • assisting with mobility;
  • assisting with treatment programs;
  • preparing food; and,
  • providing companionship, friendship and emotional support.
