A career in supporting people with disability

This qualification reflects the role of workers in a range of community settings and clients’ homes, who provide training and support in a manner that empowers people with disabilities to achieve greater levels of independence, self-reliance, community participation and wellbeing. Workers promote a person-centred approach, work without direct supervision and may be required to supervise and/or coordinate a small team.

Please note that students are required to organise their own work placement and Breakthru College is not responsible to ensure that you have a placement. If you are having trouble securing a placement, please contact your Trainer/Assessor for help as soon as possible.  

 

Students will also be required to obtain a number of clearances as listed below. However, it is the student’s responsibility to check with their work placement host organisation regarding what screening is required as organisations may each have slightly different requirements.  

  • National Police Certificate 

  • Working with children check 

  • Vaccination record check  

  • Code of Conduct check 

 

Students who complete this course may wish to continue their education into CHC52015 Diploma of Community Services and a range of other related community services qualifications. 

 

Entry requirements

Breakthru College has the following entry requirements: 

Language, Literacy and Numeracy  

Have the required level of Language, Literacy and Numeracy skills required by the course by completing a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) assessment conducted by Breakthru staff members which includes a written test and interview to complete the verbal component of the test. The LLN test assists Breakthru to identify whether students’ LLN skills are at a level suited to the course requirements. It also assists our trainers to prepare individual learning plans for each successful applicant where skills weaknesses are identified.  

Physical Requirements 

Participants will need to have a reasonable level of fitness as the role may involve a variety of physical tasks such as providing personal care, assisting clients with mobility, transfers and there can be considerable time standing and walking.  

Resource Requirements 

All students are required to bring their own laptop / computer installed with Microsoft Office or similar, to participate in our classes.  

 

Delivery and assessment

Classroom delivery 2 days a week, plus 120 hours of work placement. 

 

Breakthru College will use the following delivery methods: 

  • Face to face classroom (theory and practical sessions) – includes classroom-based delivery for knowledge and practical teaching in a simulated environment 

  • Self-paced study (structured and mandatory) - students are required to undertake self-study to complete a range of structured activities such as reading, research, completing case studies, and quizzes to reinforce your learning.  

  • Unsupervised study hours – students will be required to do research, private study and/or assignment work in their own time. The nature of this unsupervised study hours is unstructured.

  • Observation / Demonstration / Role-play 

  • Report  

  • Portfolio of Evidence  

  • Case Study  

  • Research  

  • Journal / Log 

  • Third Party Report 

 

You will be required to complete a range of activities throughout the course depending on the requirements of each unit of competency. You will also be provided with the assessment and delivery plan at the commencement of your course which outlines the topics to be covered, duration, resources and due dates.

In New South Wales you may be eligible under this qualification for Smart & Skilled funding. 

 

​In Queensland, you may be eligible under this qualification for Higher Level Skills funding.
