On 29 July 2023, the Department of Employment, Small Business and Training (DESBT) hosted the North Queensland Training Awards at Quayside Terminal, Townsville. Recognising achievements since 1962, the Queensland Training Awards highlights outstanding organisations and individuals in vocational education and training (VET). With regional, state, and national levels, competition within this award is fierce.
Breakthru College student, Julia Hurst, was nominated for the Equity Student of the Year award, an award given “for outstanding achievement in overcoming a significant barrier or disadvantage to effectively participate in VET.” Determined to use her own experience with bipolar to help others, Julia earned her Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability) through Breakthru College. Although she had spent six years in the beauty industry, Julia’s empathy and compassion led her to continue her studies to help her pursue her dream of helping people with disability, including participants of the NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme). Currently, Julia is working for MiAbilities as a support worker in palliative care.
It is no surprise, considering her determination and integrity, that Julia was named North Queensland’s Equity Student of the Year. Despite some very fierce competition, the judges recognised Julia’s hard work, dedication, and success. Winning the award in the North Queensland region meant Julia became a finalist in the Queensland Training Awards, which was held on 9 September 2023. Although Julia did not win this award, her incredible achievements deserve to be commended.
With nominations now open for the 2024 Queensland Training Awards, we look forward to hearing the stories of this year’s finalists and award winners. Nominations are open until Tuesday 12 March 2024. If you know an organisation or person who you believe deserves to be recognised for their achievements, head to the Queensland Government Department of Employment, Small Business and Training website and give them a nomination.
