A career in Allied Health Assistance
This qualification reflects the role of workers who provide therapeutic and program related support to allied health professionals. The worker is required to conduct therapeutic and program related activities under the guidance of an allied health professional. Supervision may be direct, indirect or remote and must occur within organisation requirements.
The worker is required to identify client circumstances that need additional input from the allied health professional. The worker may be engaged to work in a specialty area or work generically across the organisation in delivery of allied health assistance services. The worker, in conjunction with the allied health professional, may have responsibility for supervising other allied health assistance workers.
Please note that students are strongly encouraged to contact a host organisation and arrange their work placement as early as possible.
In the event that students are not able to secure their own work placement, please contact breakthru College so that we can assist you to secure work placement.
Students will also be required to obtain a number of clearances as listed below. Please note it is the student’s responsibility to check with their work placement host organisation regarding what screening is required, as some organisations have different policies and procedures.

Students who complete this course may wish to progress to any other HLT Qualification at Certificate IV, Diploma or Advanced Diploma level.
breakthru College has the following entry requirements:
Language, Literacy and Numeracy
You must demonstrate that you have the required level of Language, Literacy and Numeracy skills necessary to complete this course by undertaking a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) assessment. Please note that our LLN assessment is conducted via our LLN Robot purchased from the Learning Resources Group.
Learners will need to have a reasonable level of fitness as the role may involve a variety of physical tasks such as providing personal care, assisting clients with mobility and supporting clients with transfers. Learners may also be required to stand or walk for long periods of time.
To effectively participate in their studies, all online learners are required to have their own laptop / tablet installed with Microsoft Office or similar. Learners are also required to have access to a stable internet connection and a computer / laptop / tablet to participate in an online LLN assessment.
breakthru College also has an option to provide physical copies of learning and assessment resources for face to face students.
Delivery and assessment
Classroom delivery 2 days a week, plus 120 hours of work placement.
breakthru College will use the following delivery methods:
- Face to face classroom (theory and practical sessions) – includes classroom-based delivery for knowledge and practical teaching in a simulated environment
- Self-paced study (structured and mandatory) – students are required to undertake self-study to complete a range of structured activities such as reading, research, completing case studies, and quizzes to reinforce their learning.

- Portfolio of Evidence

- Journal / Log
- Third Party Report
You will be required to complete a range of activities throughout the course depending on the requirements of each unit of competency. You will also be provided with the assessment and delivery plan at the commencement of your course which outlines the topics to be covered, duration, resources and due dates.
Online study options are also available. Please be advised that if you are enrolled in an online delivery mode, you are required to attend one of our sites for practical training and assessment in a simulated environment. Our sites are located in NSW and QLD, please reach out for more information.
If you are an existing worker in the industry, you may with permission use your workplace to conduct practical training and assessment. However, if you are a new entrant to this industry, you will be required to attend one of the sites on the scheduled dates.
Students will be provided with the following support services:
- One on one support
- Computer and technology support
- Referral to external support services
- Reasonable adjustments to training and assessments.
In New South Wales you may be eligible under this qualification for Smart & Skilled funding.
In Queensland, you may be eligible under this qualification for Skills Assure Supplier.

The course consists of 16 units of competency and is delivered within a period of 6 months (for face to face mode) or 12 months (for online delivery mode). A work placement of 120 hours is also required.

Doing the Individual Support course through breakthru led me to regular employment in the disability sector. Since completing my course I have moved up two levels in pay rate, supported co-workers passing on and sharing the knowledge I obtained. I am no longer on benefits, which was the most important thing I wanted to achieve thanks to the breakthru teams dedication and support this has been possible. I am very grateful to the staff there for there help and support.
The staff and trainers went 'above and beyond' to support and encourage all of us with the necessary knowledge and understanding to successfully complete the course. Personally, I found nothing was too big or small for breakthru to assist and the three weeks of practical training gave me the extra confidence and skills needed to find employment. I have been employed as a Personal Care Worker/Support Worker in the community since completing my course, the team at breakthru are truly worth their weight in GOLD.
The course trainers delivered each course perfectly. We were well prepared and equipped with exactly what we needed to carry out our roles as support workers. breakthru even went to the extent of finding workplace placements once we completed the theory work.
